چکیده

[1] During Earth’s early history, greenhouse warming by atmospheric methane helped to maintain elevated surface temperatures. Here, we estimate the present-day abiogenic CH4 flux generated by mineral alteration (serpentinization) at midocean ridges, volcanic emissions, and geothermal sources; in addition, we assess the impact that abiogenicmethanemay have had on greenhouse warming during the early prebiotic Archean. Based on estimates of the rate of seafloor spreading and the degree of serpentinization within the oceanic crust, the flux of methane generated by serpentinized lithosphere is calculated to be 1.35 Mt CH4 y , while volcanic and geothermal sources are estimated to contribute 0.1 and 0.9 Mt CH4 y , respectively. Furthermore, it is shown that if atmospheric CO2 partial pressures were above 0.01 bar, the present-day level of abiogenic methane production could have been sufficient to maintain above-freezing surface temperatures during the Archean. The very high temperatures ( 70 C) that have been suggested for the early Archean, however, would have required extremely high methane fluxes or, more likely, greatly elevated atmospheric CO2 levels. Synthetic spectra of simulated terrestrial atmospheres containing possible biomarker gases.

NASA's proposed Terrestrial Planet Finder, a space-based interferometer, will eventually allow spectroscopic analyses of the atmospheres of extrasolar planets. Such analyses would provide information about the existence of life on these planets. One strategy in the search for life is to look for evidence of O3 (and hence O2) in a planet's atmosphere; another is to look for gases that might be p...

Disequilibrium biosignatures over Earth history and implications for detecting exoplanet life

Chemical disequilibrium in planetary atmospheres has been proposed as a generalized method for detecting life on exoplanets through remote spectroscopy. Among solar system planets with substantial atmospheres, the modern Earth has the largest thermodynamic chemical disequilibrium due to the presence of life. However, how this disequilibrium changed over time and, in particular, the biogenic dis...

Diminished greenhouse warming from Archean methane due to solar absorption lines

Previous research has shown that methane may have been sustained at high concentrations in the Archean atmosphere, helping to offset lower insolation and solve the faint young sun problem. However, recent updates to the HITRAN (High-Resolution Transmission) line database have significantly increased the shortwave absorption by CH4 in comparison to older versions of the database (e.g. HITRAN 200...

Have olivine, will gas: Serpentinization and the abiogenic production of methane on Mars

[1] Spatial variability of methane (CH4) on Mars suggests the presence of localized subsurface sources. Here, we show that olivine hydration in the Martian regolith and crust may be a major CH4 source, which contributed significantly to the warming of early Mars. Methane production is kinetically and thermodynamically favored during low-T aqueous alteration of olivine-rich rocks. Sustained rele...

Photochemical production of methane in natural waters: implications for its present and past oceanic source.

We conducted irradiation experiments with riverine, estuarine, and marine water samples to investigate the possibility of photochemical methane (CH4) formation. CH4 photoproduction was undetectable under oxic conditions or in the absence of methyl radical precursors indicating that its photochemical formation is negligible in the present ocean. Significant photochemical CH4 production was obser...
